PackagingBest started testing and sourcing materials for coffee packaging. We wanted to be sure that the decisions we made were environmentally safe. Our new packaging keeps coffee fresh and looks great. One of our core goals is to produce a coffee bag that can be recycled or composted. Yet, the thing is to find one that still meets our quality standards when it comes to coffee freshness. We realized we needed the right coffee packaging product as we pursue our vigorous pursuit of a sustainable bag.
First, we essentially consider what we can expect from environmentally sustainable packaging. There are three key areas that eco-friendly packaging that need to succeed. These are performance and shelf-life, production efficiency, and what happens to it at the end of its usage.
In this article, let’s know more about sustainable coffee packaging.
What is Sustainable Packaging?
The packaging is the most significant cause of pollution that is clogging the ocean. It is predicted to surpass all fish’s weight by 2050 at current levels. When added to the soil or burned, packaging waste pollutes the soil and poses a health risk to humans and animals.
All of us have been brought up with the word ‘reduce, reuse, recycle’ in our life. For every company, it is essential to manifest these ideas. It benefits the environment and also improves brand loyalty for eco-conscious customers.
We firmly agree that climate change is an imminent challenge to humankind. We don’t want to be part of the crisis. We want to do our best to fix the problem. So, how can we solve this problem and break off before facing significant issues? It is when sustainable packaging enters. Sustainable packaging is a relatively recent addition to the environmental aspects in packaging. More research and information are needed to look at product design. Materials selection, manufacturing, and life cycle are also being considered. It is not about the simplistic “green movement.” We all know that many firms and corporations have been joining that movement in recent years. Companies are taking environmentally sustainable actions to reduce their carbon emissions. Using more reusable content and reuse more product elements are essential too. They also inspire manufacturers, contract delivery companies, and dealers to do the same.
Keeping Your Coffee Safe, Sustainably
Coffee is perishable. Coffee beans tend to lose their freshness shortly after they are toasted. When coffee lacks its freshness, its natural flavors and aromas are reduced. All else is fair, and the earlier the beans are used, the better the coffee. When stored suitably, the coffee beans will remain good for about a month after roasting. Ground coffee is going to last for one to two weeks after roasting. What is the difference? Ground coffee has a larger surface area than coffee beans. It means that ground coffee would be more vulnerable to the four enemies of fresh coffee. It includes air, moisture, heat, and light.
Millennials and Generation Z are now the most prominent customer demographic globally. They are also mindful of plastic packaging’s adverse environmental effects. For this cause, they favor eco-friendly goods and can pay more. However, they are unable to compromise the quality. Consumers ensure that the packaging of the coffee to be eco-friendly by nature. They also consider the high quality and well-designed packaging. Sustainability and excellent efficiency are the most critical guiding principles of PackagingBest. All we do and everything we are trying to do is assessed against these two values. Our bags and pouches are food-safe and sturdy. It is specially made for freshly roasted coffee. They are blocking UV rays, oxygen, and moisture to keep the coffee fresh. It also comes with a degassing valve to release excess carbon generated after the beans have been toasted.
Which Materials Should You Use?
Our sustainable coffee packaging range includes a variety of diverse components. We acknowledge both recycled and environmentally sustainability. These are some of our environmentally friendly choices:
- Kraft Paper
It is made from recycled paper. Besides, it is unbleached kraft paper that is 100% organic, biodegradable, and compostable.
Our kraft paper bags for roasted coffee can be made with two or three layers. It is to shield the beans from moisture, direct light, oxygen. Other factors that may otherwise impair their efficiency are also considered.
- PE Laminated and EVOH Coating
Our recyclable coffee bags use PE content and EVOH coating used for barrier feature. EVOH is imported from Amcor, it’s all OTR and WVTR 2.0. Which some of the feature and usage is closer to Aluminum. The EVOH coating is considered to be one of the strongest inhibitors to gasses such as oxygen, nitrogen and carbon dioxide. You don’t need to worry about your product’s quality. These materials are suitable for food manufacturing, cosmetics and other perishable goods.
- PLA, PBS, NK and NKME
Our Biodegradable Coffee bags use this structure: the inner layer can be PLA/PBS, the middle layer can NK/NKME and the outer layer can PLA/Kraft paper. Polylactic Acid (PLA) is made from renewable resources such as corn starch or sugar cane. It is a natural polymer intended to replace commonly used petroleum-based plastics. Polybutylene Succinate PBS-based packaging is capable of offering a very high standard of food packaging, and must not deviate from similarities with current packaging, especially with regard to meeting food safety requirements.
We have benefited from using the materials NK and NKME. They are a metal-free and compostable coating that eliminates oxygen, moisture, UV light, and odor. Its barrier properties are similar to those of aluminum.
Why Should We Use Sustainable Coffee Pouches?
Retail stores are transitioning to eco-friendly packaging options. It is to face the worsening plastic emissions worldwide. Eco-packaging has also stimulated a hype among customers. These customers are well aware of plastic waste’s harmful effects on the environment. Sustainability packaging strategies seek to reduce the amount of product packaging. It encourages the use of renewable or reusable materials and reduces packaging costs. It further eliminates the use of hazardous chemicals in packaging manufacturing.
